Dan Howell and Phil Lester revealed after years of fan speculation that they are dating in a lengthy YouTube video on Monday, Oct. 13.
“Alright, let’s get this over with. Are Dan and Phil in a relationship?” Howell, 34, started. “Yes,” Lester, 38, quickly confirmed, before Howell attempted to roll credits: “Alright, bye!”
The British comedy duo went on to address fans’ overtly obsessive “shipping” – an internet term for romantically linking two people together – which has been ongoing since they began posting on YouTube in 2009.
“Because it got so loud that we couldn’t ignore it, we were being left with the choice of either address it or suppress it,” Howell later said.
“What we had was the most important thing to me and I wanted to protect it,” Howell continued. “So when other people tried to grab it and drag it into the light, I felt completely violated.”
